APRIL 12th: LISTEN TO AND CHALLENGE DOH CLAIMS OF “TREMENDOUS SUCCESS” AT THE AC&C

This Friday morning representatives of the Department of Health (DOH) will testify before the City Council’s Health Committee and have to answer questions.

About what? About all the promises made to secure passage of Local Law 59.

The City and the negotiators of LL59 hailed it as “a great step forward” … claiming it reflected the City’s “steadfast commitment” to homeless animals. (Really, that’s what they said.)

Friday’s hearing will doubtless be a mutual love fest between the DOH and the LL59′s sponsors. (You’ll hear a lot of cheery statistics and claims of being committed partners to animal welfare.)

But the fact remains that LL59 was a crass backroom deal serving political and private interests, but not the interests of animals. The “great step forward” that’s needed is to free the AC&C from City control. Only then will our homeless animals receive proper care. No longer will they be mislabeled to support cheery but false statistics. And the promise of “no kill” won’t be imaginary but real.

In short, what’s needed is real reform, not make believe.

THE HEARING: WHEN AND WHERE

The hearing is this Friday, April 12, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the 16th Floor Committee Room, 250 Broadway, Manhattan. Be sure to bring a photo ID and allow extra time to go through the building’s lobby security. If you wish to testify, bring 20 copies of your statement.
